DPI/PPI: pixels per inch for print sizing. Bleed: extra artwork beyond trim. Safe zone: area for important content. Trim: final cut size. Aspect ratio: width-to-height proportion.
Core print terms
DPI and PPI are often used together in print planning. In these tools, PPI means the effective number of image pixels available per printed inch. A 3000 pixel image printed 10 inches wide has 300 PPI across that width.
Trim is the final cut size. Bleed is extra artwork outside the trim that prevents white edges after cutting. Safe zone is the interior area where important text, logos, QR codes, and faces should stay.
Image and layout terms
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height, such as 16:9, 4:5, or 2:3. Megapixels equal width times height divided by one million. Canvas means the full working area of an exported image or PDF.
Crop removes part of the image to fit a target ratio. Padding keeps the whole image visible by adding borders or background space. Effective PPI should be checked after scaling an image in the final layout, not only from the original file.
