Why 6 × 9 is a common paperback size
6 × 9 in is a common U.S. paperback trim size and a practical default for many nonfiction, business, memoir, and general paperback projects. A 6 × 9 cover file is not simply 6 × 9; the full cover includes back cover, spine, front cover, and bleed.
Example setup
For a 6 × 9 in paperback with black-and-white interior, white paper, 120 pages, and 0.125 in bleed, calculate the spine width first, then add back cover, spine, front cover, and bleed. Use the preset in the calculator, then adjust page count to match your final formatted manuscript.
- Trim size: 6 × 9 in.
- Bleed: 0.125 in outside the trim.
- Full file width: back cover + spine + front cover + left/right bleed.
- Full file height: 9 in trim height + top/bottom bleed.

When to recalculate
Recalculate whenever page count, interior type, paper type, trim size, or bleed changes. A cover made for a 120-page book may not fit a 180-page book because the spine gets wider.
