KDP barcode safe zone for paperback covers
Plan the barcode area on a KDP paperback back cover and avoid placing important cover text or artwork where the barcode may appear.
Why the back cover needs a barcode area
KDP can place a barcode on the back cover if you do not provide your own. Keep the lower back-cover area free of important text, logos, faces, and design elements that would be damaged by an automatically placed barcode.
The calculator marks a planning barcode safe zone so you can see where to avoid important artwork. Treat it as a practical design guide, then verify final placement in KDP Previewer.
- Keep the barcode area visually quiet.
- Do not place review quotes, author bios, logos, or essential art inside it.
- Check the official preview after upload.
Amazon-placed barcode versus your own barcode
If you upload a print-ready PDF without a barcode, KDP can place one on the back cover. If you provide your own barcode, it must remain clear, scannable, correctly positioned, and away from spine and trim edges.
| Choice | What to reserve | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon-placed barcode | Clear back-cover area where KDP can place it | Text or images in that location can be rejected |
| Your own barcode | Suggested 2 × 1.2 in area with required spacing | Unreadable, colored, blurry, or misplaced barcodes can fail validation |
Where it appears on a full cover spread
For left-to-right books, the back cover is on the left side of the full spread, the spine is in the center, and the front cover is on the right. For right-to-left books, preview order changes, and KDP places the front cover on the left of the spine.
