KDP cover color, CMYK, RGB, and spot color guide
Avoid KDP paperback cover color problems by planning color space, spot colors, color profiles, and print-on-demand variation before export.
Color on screen is not the same as print color
A cover can look bright on a monitor and print differently. KDP print-on-demand output has normal color variance, and files with mixed color spaces, embedded profiles, spot colors, or heavy transparency effects can produce unexpected results.
Color setup checks before export
Use one practical color workflow and avoid print features that do not fit KDP’s print-on-demand process. If you design in RGB, expect conversion and preview changes; if you design in CMYK, still verify in KDP Previewer and proof copy.
| Issue | Why it matters | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Spot colors / Pantone | Not compatible with KDP print-on-demand expectations | Convert spot colors to process colors |
| Multiple color spaces | Can cause color variance or unexpected output | Keep the file consistent where possible |
| Color profiles | May be removed or produce unexpected results | Avoid relying on embedded profiles for final appearance |
| Transparency effects | Can render differently in print | Flatten or export according to your design software guidance |
What this calculator can help with
The calculator will not judge color quality. It gives the physical cover dimensions, pixel canvas, bleed, spine, and barcode planning area so your color decisions happen on the correct canvas size. Color approval still depends on the exported PDF, preview, and proof.
