The spine is controlled by page count and paper choice
The spine sits between the back cover and front cover. It gets wider as page count increases, and it varies by paper option. Do not place final spine text until your formatted manuscript page count is close to final.
The calculator estimates spine width from page count and the KDP paperback multiplier for the selected paper setting, then uses it to build the full cover file size.
KDP multiplier table and examples
Use the multiplier that matches your interior and paper choice. For standard color, KDP lists the same multiplier as black-and-white white paper; for premium color, use the premium color multiplier.

Why small page-count changes matter
A few pages may not look significant in the manuscript, but cover files are measured precisely. If a designer centers spine text on an old width and the manuscript later changes, the spine label can shift off center after upload.

Do not confuse spine width with book thickness
Spine width is the design measurement used in the cover file. Physical book thickness can vary slightly in manufacturing, but the cover file still needs to follow the upload template and preview requirements.
